ARISTILLUS
Directory - Section 12

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The eastern edge of Mare Imbrium is one of the most interesting parts of the lunar surface. The lunar Alps with their well-known alley, the solitary mountain Piton and the group of three craters Archimedes, Autolycus and Aristillus are suitable objects for telescopic observation. Refer to your Antonin Rukl lunar atlas chart, page 51. Luna 2 (E-1A series) was the second of the Soviet Union's Lunar Program spacecraft launched to the Moon. It was the first spacecraft to reach the surface of the Moon. On September 14 1959 it successfully impacted with the lunar surface east of Mare Imbrium near the craters Aristides, Archimedes, and Autolycus.
